Is Roundup Weedkiller Safe? Examining the $2.1 Billion Jury Verdict Against Monsanto

A Georgia jury has ordered Bayer, the parent company of Monsanto, to pay nearly $2.1 billion in damages to John Barnes, who claimed that the company's Roundup weed killer caused his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This verdict includes $65 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages, marking one of the largest awards in such cases to date. Bayer plans to appeal, arguing that the decision conflicts with scientific evidence and regulatory assessments asserting the product's safety. Since acquiring Monsanto, Bayer has faced over 177,000 Roundup-related lawsuits and allocated $16 billion for settlements. Despite numerous studies and legal claims linking Roundup's active ingredient, glyphosate, to cancer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maintains that it is not likely carcinogenic when used correctly.
